The Sea Otter

Essay topics:

The Sea Otter

The article states that there is a declining sea otters population due to environmental pollution and provides three reasons to support it. However, the professor explains that, due to the ongoing investigation, the most likely cost of this phenomenon is actually predation and refutes each of the author’s reasons.

First, the reading states that there is an increasing level of chemicals that is detrimental to the sea otters’ immune system. The professor refutes this point by providing the fact that there were no dead sea otters found at the shore. This indicates that, instead of the reason stated in the article, they were most likely got eaten.

Second, the article claims that sea otter is not the only species facing a decline in population. In fact, other sea mammals in the same area are having the same problem as environmental pollution affects the entire ecosystem. The professor refutes this point by stating that it is because those sea mammals are orcas’ prey. He said orcas used to hunt whales before but as most whales were hunted down by humans, orcas had to look for alternatives which are sea mammals.

Third, the article reading avers that an uneven pattern of population decline is the effect of water currents, which swirl and create an uneven chemical concentration. The lecture opposes this point by providing evidence that there is a stable population of sea otters located in shallow and rocky areas. He explains that the reason is that orcas cannot access that area due to its large body size.

In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about a declining sea otters population, three main points in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
