Sea otters are a small mammal that lives in the waters along North America s west coast from California to Alaska A few years ago some of the sea otter populations off of the Alaskan coast started to decline rapidly and raised several concerns because o

The reading states that the sea otters decline in population is due to pollution and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor refutes that by stating that the decline in sea otters population is due to attacks by predators and provides explanations for the same.

First, the professor says that the sea otters dead bodies are found in seldom on the coast. If suppose the reason for the decrease in population is due to increase in pollution, the we should have identified large number of dead bodies instead of only few. So, the logical explanation for very less number of dead bodies found is that the predators have killed the sea otters and have eaten them.

Second, the article claims that the orcas are the only predators which could cause such effect. However, the don't generally hunt smaller preys such as otters. Professor refutes this by pointing out that the whales have disappeared from the region. So, the orcas may have adapted to the change and started hunting smaller preys such as otters.

Third, the article claims that the uneven pattern of otter decline may be explained by ocean currents or other environmental factors, which may have created uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast. However, the professor refutes this by saying that the decline in otter population is less in shallow rocket region suggesting that the predators are the most probable cause for reduction in otter population.
