Pluto is recognised as a planet for a long time now. However, recently, Pluto lost its status as a planet and is demoted to a dwarf planet status after numerous debates. People famously refer to these debates as "Pluto wars". In the reading, the author provides more details about the reasoning behind the decision. However, the lecturer provides reasons for Pluto to consider as a planet.
To begin with, the author states that the vote took place at the International Astronomical Union Conference and it was decided that Pluto has to be dwarf planet. However, the lecturer points out that only ten percent of Astronomers attended the conference. Even out of these ten percent, most of them left the conference before the voting. So, the decision is not based on Astronomers worldwide. He also claims that suppose the conference had electrical voting, there is a chance that the decision about the Pluto status could have been different.
Furthermore, the reading states that there are number of planetary objects similar to Pluto and they are not classified as planets. The lecturer refutes this point by saying that if the conference had electrical voting, Astronomers would have chosen Pluto and other two objects as planets instead of demoting Pluto to dwarf planet status.
Finally, the reading says that even though it is a bad day for Pluto lovers, people in general have accepted the idea and the next generation of children will grow with the new idea. The lecturer contradicts this point by explaining that there has been number of petitions to withdraw the decision. In some parts of the world, people celebrate Pluto day as well. So, it is hard for people to accept the change.
