smart cars
Symbolic in science fictions, smart cars may eventually come true with its cutting-edge auto drive system. Advocates for this game-changing upgrade in the automobile industry proclaim that these self-driving cars will be safer, quicker and less expensive than conventional cars. Nevertheless, a lecture on this invention may shatter their confidence.
The lecture first states a simple fact: any device can have glitches or even malfunction. It may be true that the automatic driving system can avoid collision with the help of built-in sensors and theoretically eliminate human errors while driving. However, when the system fails, more cars and victims will be involved in the accident, because smart cars tend to be packed closer to each other on the road. Therefore, it is still too soon to say that these computerized cars are safe.
Admitting the high speed of smart cars, the lecture then makes a logical prediction that a growing number of people will choose driving over public transportation to commute due to the convenience brought this new technology. The additional cars on the road will surely test the capacity of the highway system and cause congestion that in turn slows down the traffic. So even the smart cars can be faster than traditional ones, the passenger are unlikely to enjoy the trip.
Finally, the lecture intends to warn those excited by news that self-driving cars can save their money. Shorter route equals longer life span of the car parts, but the car itself, thanks to the very expensive global positioning technology and sensors required for auto drive, should also be expected to be costly. And people may well be advised that the bill for repairing these fancy gadgets is no joke as well. Therefore, it is probably unwise to replace the old car with the new toy before doing the math.
