sound
The reading and lecture are both about whether scientists can detect the unusual sounds that sailors could hear about twenty years or not. The passage presents three explanations to posit why it is a mysterious phenomenon since scientists cannot recognize any solid moving of submarine in the ocean. The professor, however, refutes all of those explanations.
To begin with, the author of the reading claims that orca whales are a kind of animal produce sounds, and because they are occupying with ritual, make this sound, and the submarine cannot detect their voices. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this claim by mentioning that this theory is implausible since whales live in the superficial ocean and submarine located in the depth of the sea, so whale's voice, which has not to hear by sailors.
Secondly, the article posits that in the ocean, sort of animals live without any invertebrates and have a soft body; the names are a giant squid. He assumes the sound belongs to this animal, because of their body, they are not detectable. However, the professor maintains an opposite opinion that although this gigantic animal is a better candidate than whales, it is not a great idea; the sounds belong to them because they are alive until now, but the sound merely was been detected for two decades.
Third, the reading mention that maybe this sound is for the strange submarine of a foreign country and cannot register to sonar, so submarine was not detectable. The professor, on the other hand, cast doubt on this claim by stating that if the submarine is from a secret country, they should move fast and further away from Russian submarine and the sound hardly hear. Moreover, scientists cannot build the submarine, which drives fast and is silent and cannot detectable.
