Starting in the 1960s and continuing until the 1980s, sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North Alantic and Arctic Ocean would occasionally hear strange sounds. These underwater noises reminded the submarine crews of frog croaks, so they called t

Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses strange sounds that were like frog croaks and russian submarines used to hear the during the period from 1960s untill 1980s. Because of the frog like croaks, russian called them "quackers" which was like it was moving very nimble while sonars were disable to detect the source. the author states some likely sources for the sound. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate this claim.

Initially, the author says that the source of the sound might had been orca whales during their courtship rituals since they make some noises to call out each other. However, the lecturer explains that this idea seems not convincing because orac whales live near the surface of the water while the submarine is deep in the water so it makes impossible for people to hear their sound. Also she mentiones that sonars are enable to detect them but the source of the sound could not be found on the sonar of these sub marines.

Second, the writer proclaims that another possibility for the source of the sound is giant squids, some large animal that inhabit deep in the water and has a soft body with no skeleton which explains why they could not be detected by the sonars. Yet again, the speaker underscores that the sounds were heared only between 1960s and 1980s but giant squads lived before 1960s and after 1980s. This fact contradicts the point that giant squids do live today but no sound can be heared anymore.

The last point of contention between the reading and listening passages is the exictance of some sort of military technology. The author thinks that another country's submarine which were secretly patroling the area wa the source of the sound. On the other hand, the speaker explains that a submarine can not move as fast as the source of the sound. Also she points out that the submarines make engine sound and they are detectable on sonars because untill now we do not have the technology to make smooth engines and staying hidden from sonars.
