Starting in the 1960s and continuing until the 1980s, sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean would occasionally hear strange sounds.
As mentioned in the lecture, the quackers phenomena is still a mystery, and its source is still uncovered.
There is much debate on the causes of quackers mentioned in the reading, and here are some of the problems, as the lecturer elaborated.
Based on the reading, the first theory suggests that quackers are the sound of male and female orca whales when they call for each other. However, orca whales being the source of the sounds is highly unlikely because orca whales stay near the ocean surface. Nevertheless, the submarine detected the sound very deep in the ocean, and even if orca whales made it, the submarine's sonar should have detected the whales.
The second idea is that the sounds were caused by a giant squid, which can be plausible. However, a strange phenomenon makes it debatable. The submarines detected the sound between the 1960s and continuing until the 1980s. After that, the sound stopped, but we know that the habitat of the squids has not changed, and there is no reason for the quackers to stop suddenly.
The third theory explained that the submarines were picking up other military's stray sounds. However, the source of the sound seemed to be moving with great speed and agility. Even with the technology nowadays, submarines can not move around and change direction very promptly; besides, submarines have engine noises that were not detected alongside the quackers, and submarines do not have such a quiet engine be undetectable.
