Summarize the point made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the read passage.
The lecturer brings to topic the negative aspects of planting genetically modified trees. Conversely, the author of the reading passage specifies the benefits of growing genetically modified trees.
On the lecture, the first topic that is discussed is the capacity of the genetically modified trees to resist adverse climates, insects and pests. The argument they give is that these trees are genetically uniform and because of this, they would not survive in any foreigner habitat. To the contrary, natural trees survive by being the most apt of their specie. However, this only challenges partially what the author says, which is that the genetically modified trees are hardier and more able to resist specific pests. The author does not deny that the modified trees could resist pests, instead, affirms that they could only resist the pest for which they have been modified.
The second negative aspect that is highlighted in the lecture are the hidden costs of growing genetically modified trees. It is revealed that the developers charge the farmers greatly for the seeds. After buying them once, the farmers cannot use the seeds again to grow a second crop. Instead, they have to pay for another lot of seeds. Conversely, the author explains that it would actually be cheaper to grow modified trees, as these trees grow faster, provide more food and offer greater returns to the farmers by allowing them to stop using pesticides.
Finally, they put in evidence how the genetically modified trees could actually do more harm than good. It is pointed out that the modified trees could leave without space the natural trees because of the former’s aggressive growing. This challenges the content of the lecture, in which it is stated that by growing modified plants, the life of the natural trees could actually be saved. Of course, the author arguments that the lives of the natural trees could be saved because only the modified ones would be cut down and harvested.
