Both the article and the lecture are about 52-hertz whale, a mysterious whale that sings in unusually high pitch of 52 hertz. While the author of the passage explores three theories to explain the whale. However, the lecturer finds flaws in each theory.
The first theory suggests that the unusual high pitch is caused by the fact that the whale is the hybrid of two species. However, this point is challenged by the lecturer. He believes that it is unlikely the right explanation by stating the evidence that its migration pattern is different from the normal whales. If it was the hybrid, it should have the same migration pattern as others.
Secondly, the poor hearing might cause the whale to fail copying the sounds it hears, resulting in unusual song, the writer insists. Similar to human, whales may learn to sing by copying the sound they hear. Whereas the lecturer says that the eccentric high pitch is caused by the physical structure of throat, not relevant to the sense of hearing. The high pitch is caused by the throat and it does nothing to do with the poor hearing.
52-hertz may be, the third theory assumes, the only remain of a species that is now extinct. The lecturer believes this is irrational because even if this is a species that is now gone, it should have parents that have the same song.
