Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
The passage purposes several reasons to argue that Spartacus is an appealing hero. However, the lecture challenges the passage by pointing out that many stories about Spartacus are not historically accurate.
Firstly, the passage contends that Spartacus bravely fought with the Romans to return his home. However, the lecture states that it is not the only goal of Spartacus. He has found his way home after the first triumph but he did not take that opportunity. Instead, he marched towards the city to conquer it and obtain valuables in it, which is not worth admiring.
Additionally, the lecture challenges the point in the passage that Spartacus is a military genius because he defeated the strong Roman army with an ill-equipped army. It contends that Spartacus won the battle not owing to his talents but because the Roman army did not take it seriously. What he put down was just a weak unit. In fact, he was quickly defeated when he met a relatively powerful Roman army, which is in direct contradiction with what the passage says.
Finally, in contrast to the passage's claim that Spartacus refused an attractive offer to liberate Roman slaves, the lecture reminds us that this story is not backed up by historical evidence. Actually, people in the 18th century in Europe made up that story in the play in that they wanted to find an inspiring hero from ancient times to mentally support their anti-slavery movement.
