Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific arguments presented in the reading passage.

At the end of the Triassic period, there was a mass-extinction that caused the extinction of lots of living species. The passage and the lecture are discussing about some possible explanations. The passage gives us several possible explanations, but none of them is accepted by the lecture.

First, the passage mentions that the decline of sea levels near the end of the Triassic period could destory the habitats for ocean populations that lived in the shallows or on the coast, and then made a profound effect on food chains, leading to mass extinctions. But the lecture tells us that the see level change was a gradual process. The species could adapt to such a gradual process. If this process wanted to destory the habitats, it had to be quite sudden. So this change could not result in mass extinctions.

The passage also states that the sulfur dioxide released by volcanoes could cause a massive climate cooling, which might lead to the extinctions. However, the lecture tells us that if the SO2 could lead to the massive climate cooling, SO2 had to stay in the atomsphere for a long time. But it only took few years to clear out, since the SO2 could combine with water and fall as rain.

Finally, the passage introduce a theory involves an asteroid strike. Asteroids could occasionally collide with Earth and displaced large amounts of soil and rock. The displaced debris was thrown up into the atmosphere to block sunlight and caused most plants to die and many animal species starve. But the lecture shows that people are unable to find the remins of an asteroid that matches the time. People only find that there was an asteroid strike 120 million years before the end of Triassic.
