Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are about Chevaleir de Seingalt's memoir. Whereas the autor of the reading states that there are doubts about the accuracy of the memoir itself, the lecturer suggests that the memoir is a reliable historical source of the eighteenth century. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, Chevaleir claimed to be rich while he was living in Switzerland but, while he was there, he borrowed a large sum of money from a merchant that he would not have needed if he was rich. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that there are register of Chevaleir spending huge amounts of money and the he had to borrow that sum because he had to sell some assets to get liquidity and that is something that takes several days to process.
Secondly, the reading states that critics are also skeptical about the accuracy of the records of Chevalier conversation's with Voltaire. The autor of the reading explains that the memoir was written several years after the conversations happened so it is not very likely that Chevalier remembered exact fragments of the conversation. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that Chevalier kept notes and journals that he consulted while making his memoir and that is how he was able to remember exact phrases.
Finally, the reading claims that it is more possible that Chevalier bribed his jailers to free him rather that he escaped from the prison's ceiling. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that it was actually possible from him to escape this way. She points out that the ceiling had to be repaired short after he escaped which is enough proof of Chevalier's claims.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about Chevalier's memoir, the three main points in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
