Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Finding soft tissue of the bones of a 70 million-year-old T-Rex was an exciting accomplishment for scientists. However, it may not be as it shows. Both the lecture and reading talk about this finding. The lecturer is not so sure about the validity of the tissue found in the T-Rex’s bone, while the reading is claiming that this tissue is a promising discovery.
The first issue we encounter is the accuracy of the claim concerning the channels found within the T-Rex’s bones. The professor is quick to point out that these alleged blood vessels may actually be the remnants of bacteria. According to the man bacteria tends to colonize these sorts of areas and what seems to be blood vessels may actually be the organic trace of the bacteria. However, the text is a bit more optimistic, it claims that these channel-like features are evidence of a soft substance that may represent the blood vessels of this ancient animal.
Furthermore, the discussion transitions into the presence of a sphere that could represent blood cells. Once more, the speaker dismisses this hypothesis. He states that other identical structures have been found in animals that did have blood cells, he points to the idea that these spheres may be of mineral origin and therefore could not be blood cells. In contrast, the passage alleges that the microscopic spheres found within the bone showed the presence of iron. Iron is essential in the formation of blood cells and thus this could be the smoking gun that points to this discovery as an indication of the presence of blood cells.
Last but not least, the final point of discord revolves around the trace of Collagen found in the T-Rex’s remains. A final word of contrast is offered by the instructor. Quite simply the man says that the oldest remains of Collagen found is around 100,000 years old, in the man’s eyes there is no way that Collagen could last 70 million years as it is the case in the sample of the T-Rex’s bones. Nevertheless, the article is convinced that the fibrous protein found in the T-Rex’s bone is the type of biochemical material expected to be found in association with Collagen.
