Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the sea mammal that is sea otter .The author of the reading states that the sea otter are declining rapidly and the reason behind this is environmental pollution. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions the main reason behind this is hunting by predators rather than the pollution and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
The author of the writing begins by stating that the water gets polluted by the chemical substances from industries ,oil rigs etc .This infects the water species and subsequently they die. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends there are no evidences found of dead sea otter caused by the pollution. Instead they are killed by the predator and eaten immediately by them.
According to the passage, not only the otter other small sea mammals such as seals and sea lions are also affected by the pollution. He also assert the fact that predator only hunts for large sea mammals. The speaker on other hand points out that since the large species are hunted by the humans, orcas have no other option to hunt. Thus, they started to kill small sea mammals in order to survive.
Also ,the reading passage notes that other main factor of declining otter is uneven climatic condition which is again the result of pollution .The professor rebuts the argument .He says otter living area depends on whether the orcas are available or not. But the orcas can easily access to those places. He puts forth the idea on stability of otter in other side of Alaska is that otter cannot adapt in sallow environment.
As we can see, the author and the speaker have very different views on extinction of sea mammal otter .The lecturer effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
