Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading and lecture are both about the mysterious declination of population in Easter island. The author of the reading proposes some ideas that depict the possible reason behind this. However, the lecturer disagrees with the explanation and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
Firstly, the author mentions that the boat carrying the native people also transferred the rats to the island. These rats fed highly on palm tress resulting deforestation. Furthermore, natural disasters occured from deforestation made the people complicate to grow food. The lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that although the prevalence of rat gave rise to destruction of land nevertheless there was no scarce of food. In addition, most of the inhabitants were fisher and more than half of the food sources came from sea. Not only this there were also fertile soil to yield potatoes.
Secondly, according to the passage the fundamental cause of population reduction is war among inhabitants. To be more precise, exacavation has found the pieces of blade and weapon that would have been used in the war consequently more residents lost their lives . The speaker on other hand points out that even though the finding seemed to be weapons but was constructing tools in real. In addition, since the materials were not sharp and pointed there could not be used as a weapon in warfare.
Finally, the reading passage notes that population is plummeted by the diseases from foreigners of Europe and South America. Furthermore, the contact with these people caused indigenous people suffer from severe heath issues and eventually population is degraded. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that indeed the contact with non-native resident people was detrimental and cause many people to die, it was prior to 17th century. During this century, the population elevated to almost 20000 therefore disease didn’t seem to cause population reduction.
As we can see, the author and professor holds very conflicting views on the mysterious dropping of native citizen. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
