Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the dodo which once resided in Indian Ocean. The author of the reading states that owing to the over hunting by humans now it is in the state of extinction. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions that there are other contributing factors rather then the human’s hunting behind it and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that although they are large in size they have weak feather which lead them to become easy prey to the hunters. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends dodos are horrible in taste. In addition, there are other local desirable species prevailing there that are better in taste. Therefore, it does not make any sense to kill dodos while there are other alternatives available.
Secondly, according to the writing they are friendly in nature. Furthermore, they are susceptible to welcome new guest without any fear and this results their sudden death. The speaker on other hand points out that though they are of amicable nature, human did not hunt them however the other species they brought along with them. Dodos are likely to be attacked by other animals instead.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that there has been evidence of human caves found with numerous bone of dodos. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that behind the extinction of dodos there is a great hand of other species as mentioned earlier. Moreover, owing to the introduction of new animals, they initiate to build their home along with the destruction of habitat of dodos. Hence, humans are not the compelling reason for dodos decrement.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on dodos extinction. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
