Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the free trade that are likely to flourish economy of any nation. Th author of the reading states that, this is beneficial to elevate in nation's income. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions that government should rather focus on fair trade than on free trade and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that, this will open door to international market encouraging foreign direct investment and thus aid in enhancing country's economy. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer's position. He contends that, even though this seems beneficial yet this should not be at the expense of labor and environment. Furthermore, this accord pressure on country for social and environmental regulation.
Secondly, according to the writing, owing to the world trade organization rule, this has granted special right to nation like sub-saharian African countries to impose high import tariffs. Indeed, this has greatly assisted them to enjoy good advantage over foreign competitors. The speaker, on other hand points out that, over the past few decades these countries has lost huge sum while engaging in free trade and now they are suffering from loan debt which would not be the case if they were out of it. Moreover, they could raise enough surplus to be used for education and vaccination for every children of nation.
Finally, the reading passage also notes, this ensures the proper allocation of resources since they deliver goods to those who value the most. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that, they weaken the bargaining power of poor nation which results in diversion of world from multilateral free trade. For example, trading blocks in countries like US, Japan and so on suffer unequal bargain power that create challenges to obtain useful resources.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on the advantages of free trade, the speaker effectively challenges the writer's argument.
