Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific solutions presented in the reading passage.
Both the reading, and the professor, are discussing about the utilizing one of the three ways for the survival of Torreya taxifolia plants which are about to extinct. The reading suggest that any of these three efforts can be successful. However, the professor cast doubt upon them and refutes each of reading’s points.
First of all, the professor explains that reestablishing of Torreya in north of Florida where they were in abundance, would not be successful because these areas are strongly affected by changes in climate either because of global warming or the wetland through out Florida have been drained causing the area more dryer. Therefore, Torreya would not be able to survive because of the un availability of microclimate condition. This opposes the reading which states that Torreya would be survived by reestablishing them in cool and damp areas of microclimate where they were in large quantity before.
Second, the professor mentioned that planting Torreya seeds to an entirely different location away from its microclimate will not work. He explained this by giving an example of another plant named Black Locust. He said that humans moved that plant to the north in a new environment for its survival and it spread very fast and killed and killed other plants in that environment which were already in danger of extinction. This contradicts reading which claims that planting Torreya seeds in a totally new environment will be helpful for its survival.
Finally, the professor disagrees with the reading’s suggestion of planting Torreya seeds in research centers where scientists can protect and do research to avoid its extinction. The professor opposes this by saying that research centers will not be able to provide large and genetically diverse environment which Torreya needs in order to resist diseases in a long term.
