The reading and the lecture are both about communal online encyclopedias which is about the collection of objects on various subjects. The writer of the reading suggests three explanations that make online encyclopedias less valuable than the printed one. On the other hand, none of the explanations provided by the writer seem convincing to the lecturer.
To begin with, the author outlines that contributors in online encyclopedias provide more inaccurate and flawed information than traditional ones. This is because they don’t have enough academic credentials. By contrast, the lecturer notes that the outline does not bring about the results the author made. She posits that traditional encyclopedias are not accurate, either. Furthermore, she mentions that it is easier to correct mistakes in the online version, however, in the traditional version the mistakes remain for decades.
Second, according to the reading, the author claims that the nature of the encyclopedias provides hackers to alter information in them. This claim was challenged by the lecturer, either. she points out that one strategy is allowing people and contributors to change based on a format making sure articles are reliable. The second strategy she explains is devoting special editors to monitoring changes to eliminate changes they believe decisive.
Finally, it is claimed in the reading that communal topics are so popular and less important creating a deceiving impression of what important is. In contrast, this claim was debunked by the lecturer. She notes that there is little space in the traditional version to depict a variety of interests people have in articles. In the online version, however, not only the academic articles presented, there are a variety of articles.
