Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading. In 1939, David O Selznick produced a film of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gone with the Wind. The movie proved to

The text and the lecture provide two opposite viewpoints regarding the allegations of racism connected to the movie - Gone with the wind. While the text posits that the movie has encouraged racist elements, the professor feels that these allegations are overstated. In her eyes, the movie must be considered on a positive note - as it helped the talented black actors to get an opportunity to act. She provides counter statements to the opinion; the narrator held according to the text.

In the first place, the text states that the life of slavery was portrayed as a golden age in the movie. But, the professor claims that the movie has never suggested the right to degrade Africans. In contrast, the film has made a suggestion to change the lives of women, by expanding their opportunities, according to the professor. Thus, the notion that people were treated as slaves as per the reading, is countered in the lecture.

What's more, the movie depicted the character of the slave as a smart and rebellious person according to the professor. The slave often had the courage to disobey the orders of the master and Butterfly McQueen also won the best-supporting actress award for her hysterical performance. Moreover, the lecture states that while taking the other characters into account, the role of the slave has somewhat faded and this is the reason for some people to think in a negative sense. This contradicts the notion - the character was embarrassing - as per the lecture.

Finally, on the one hand, the text claims that the modern viewers cannot admire the characters played by watching the movie - Gone with the Wind, but on the other hand, the professor states that this movie has provided an opportunity for talented African actors to be a part of Hollywood films. Moreover, it provided job opportunities and has made a way for the future generation of blacks to act in movies, according to the lecture. So, the notion that the modern viewers must feel embarrassed about this movie, according to the reading, is refuted by the professor.
