The supposed voyage of Brendan the navigator from Ireland to North America

Brendan was a priest from Ireland who voyaged in the search for "Island of Blessed". The text cites three reasons why people believe that Brendan has visited America in the 6th century before any European explorations. The lecturer, however, opposes these evidences and says they are not convincing enough.

First, the passage suggests that the locations where Brendan stumbled upon during his voyage resemble the locations that one would normally encounter during a voyage from Ireland to North America. These locations are believed to be Faroe Island, Iceland and Greenland. The lecturer casts doubt on these interpretations by suggesting that these could be any other place. For instance, the island of sheep can be anywhere other than Faroe Island or an area with burning hill can be any hill where fire is burning.

Second, the journey have been re-enacted by a group of scholars by building a boat that have similar chracterstics to the boats of that time named curraghs. They concluded that this journey was possible by the technology of the time. According to professor, the reconstructed boat have superior feature to those of Brendan's time. For instance, the reconstructed boats are longer than Curraghs.

Third, markings that resemble the old Irish writing is another reason brought by the text. There are similarities between the discovered markings that contain vertical lines and ogham, a language used at the time. The professor states that, although, some letters resemble ogham but they contain characterstics that are not indicator of that language. For example, the discovered markings contain pictures of sun while ogham did not contain pictures.
