The article states that taxes on purchasing of cigarettes or unhealthy food have important benefits. However, the lecturer challenges the effectiveness of this idea and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading claims that those kinds of taxes have shown an excellent result by discouraging people from buying expensive products. The professor says that these taxes might discourage some people, but it can lead to negative consequences, since individuals who are addicted to cigarettes start buying cheaper, of low quality cigarettes. Therefore, it will result in greater risk. Moreover, high taxes on unhealthy food will leave people consuming those products much less money for buying healthy food.
Second, the article posits that taxes on purchasing cigarettes are financially fair by claiming that taxing people who are engaged in those activities will pay much more than those who are following a healthy lifestyle. Nevertheless, the woman casts doubts on this idea by comparing people with high and low income. It can be very challenging and difficult to pay those taxes for people who earn much less than those with high income.
Finally, author of the reading part says that these taxes will increase the revenue for the government. However, the lecturer opposes this point by explaining that this kind of income will make the government dependent on this source of money. According to professor, it will lead to restriction of smoking everywhere to increase government’s income.
