The text is discussing salvage logging which defines it as a way we aim to deal with dead trees and remove them and provides three reasons of support. The professor goes against all of the explained reasons and tells us why she is against the text.
The reading and lecture are both about salvage logging after forest damage. The article states that salvage logging is beneficial for both forest and the economy and provide three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that salvage logging may be helpful but results in longer term have disadvantages more than the benefits and refutes each of the author reasons.
Firstly, the article mentions that if the dead trees are not removed it will take years to decompose. salvage logging make space for new trees. The lecturer counters this by saying natural process of decomposition make soil richer and it is suitable for next generation of trees.
Secondly, the article claims that the damage forest is a suitable place for insects which is in a large amount are harmful for healthy trees. The professor contends that it's true that the number of insect’s increase but they aren't necessarily harmful for example there is some insect in Alaskan forest and they never hurt the forest and also the forest is not only a place for insects it is a home for birds and the other animals too.
Thirdly, it is stated in the article that salvage logging has economic benefits there is a lot of industrial product that relate to wood and may be trees harmed from fire but still can provide much wood that is usable by industrials. The lecture opposes this point. He said that it does not last very long and the jobs created are just temporary jobs and it hasn't real economic benefits.
