In times of an economic crisis, in which area should governments reduce its spending? 1. Arts 2. Scientific research 3. Parks and public gardens.
When people facing the pandemic world since 2020, their countries are also severing from the economic crisis due to the lockdown of all the activities. It is crucial that the government reduce the budget to improve the economic crisis. Some people may think that the research of science is reliable while others state that the creation of arts and parks could take advantage. In my opinion, I agree with the idea that government spends less money on scientific research for the following reasons.
First of all, most scientific research is supported by universities and private companies. In other words, it is not the government’s duty to invest money in scientific research. For example, the vaccine of COVID-19 was all invented by private companies because they have rich academic resources and a budget for the study. In Taiwan, the government just spend twenty million dollars on buying the vaccine with the biologic’s corporation. However, if the government decide to invent vaccine by themselves, they have to hire experts, construct the research building, or purchase a lot of equipment. As a result, the budget of scientific research would be extremely high and take an unrecoverable economic crisis.
Second, the government is responding to improve the public space and perverse the art pieces as a part of welfare because the policy could improve people’s lives as soon as possible. The government is the owner of the art pieces and the land of open space in the whole city, they should manage them. To be specific, In New York, the city government invests money to update the masterpieces of the City Art Museum, this policy helps to release the citizens' stress immediately when they enjoy the artistic atmosphere. Also, the construction of Central Park would be redesign and recycle every year to provide a place for people to relax. The financial investment of those fields not only enhances the citizens’ living quality but also helps them back to their works concentratedly especially during the economic depression.
To conclude, the consideration of art and public space is valuable because it brings a better life for citizens. In contrast, spending money on scientific research is unimaginable. Therefore, I strongly comment that governments have to reduce the investment on scientific research than arts and parks.
