The reading and the lecture are both about the extinction of Steller’s sea cow, which had been living in the water around Bering Island in Siberia. The author of the reading feels that there are some theories that describe causes of the extinction of the Steller’s sea cow while the lecture opposes the assertion of the author.
To begin with, the author argues that the sea cows might be over hunted by Siberian people. According to the article, there is a possibility that Siberian people hunted sea cows for their food because they were good sources of food for them. This specific argument is challenged by the author. He is of the opinion that the speculation which is that sea cows were one of the foods of Siberian people is fact, however, those reasons cannot lead them to extinction. Sea cows were pretty massive animals. Hence, even if Siberian people hunted it for their food, only one sea cow might be enough for them to eat.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the ecosystem disturbance is also reasonable to explain the issue of extinction of sea cows. In the article, it is said that ecosystem disturbance provoked the decline of their main source of food: kelp. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the decline of the kelp was not a problem that existed in that time. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the whales, to illustrate, which has existed by depending on kelp, still exists now. If the decline of the kelp was a fact, whales cannot exist currently.
Lastly, the author posits that the last doubtful reason for this topic is European fur traders. Moreover, it is stated in the article that they had been trying to hunt them to acquire its fur by using their weapons. However, the lecturer doubted the state which the author mentioned. He notes that the sea cows population had already declined before the European fur traders settled there. Hence, it cannot be the reason that accounted for the extinction of the sea cow.
