TOEFL T P O 11 - Integrated Writing Task

This material addresses the question of the consequences of the decline in reading literature. The reading passage suggests that those consequences are devastating for the reading public, for culture, and for the literature itself. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that not all the tendencies are disadvantageous.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that in particular we lose our imagination, possibility to enrich our language since we prefer reading law-quality books which do not stimulate us intellectually. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that, for example, books in the fields of science and history that cannot be considered as literature may also be of highest quality and as creative, as novels, plays and poems.
Additionally, the article posits that the value of culture is underestimated nowadays since we spend more time watching TV, in the Internet, or listening to music. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she mentions that the mentioned forms of entertainment may also be valuable from the cultural perspective - for example, a beautiful music; and, therefore, we cannot draw conclusion that reading less inevitably leads to the degradation of culture.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that the tendency of reading less explains the fact why publishers support writers less. This goes counter to the listening passage, according to which, there are a lot of pieces of contemporary literature which are extremely hard to understand, and this is one of the most important factors explaining the relevant actions of publishers.
