The reading states that an amateur sketch has come up for sale and some people believe that this is a portrait of Jane Austen and the reading provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the evidence is not convincing as the portrait came from an extended family of Hane Austen and he refutes the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that Austen's family recognized it as a portrait of the author. But, the professor refutes the reason stating that Austin died 70 years earlier before the portrait came out. As a result, no one from the family saw her. So, they can not tell whether that portrait is her or not.
Second, the face in the portrait clearly resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch, which we knows depicts Austen. But, the professor contends that Austen's family was very wealthy and had an extended family. He also states that the portrait might be others or others teenage from the same family. He thinks that the picture is one of her cousins.
Third, the reading avers that the painting is not signed, not dated but there is evidence that it was painted when Austen was a teenager as the style is similar to Ozias Humphrey. But, the lecturer refutes this point stating that it only matches with the style and nothing else. He also states that the man who sold the canvas, William, started selling when he was 27, but at that time Austen already passed her teenage life.
