The passage and the lecture are both about the possible ways of stopping cane toads spead and the reasons why they can not be implemented.
First of all, the article mentions that spreading can be stopped via national fence. This method is already used in twentieth ecntury to stop the spread of rabbits. But compared with them, cane toads most of the time use rivers and streams. For them it is not the problem the pass the fance by water. After passing that fence, they can make new populations on the other side of the fence with means that fence is not so effective.
Secondly, the writer suggests that toads can be captured and eliminated by group of volunteers. Main argument for this method is that the size of cane toads are big enough which makes easy to catch them. The lecturer, however, rebuts on this by mentioning that volunteers may also destory other native animals. The reason is that cane toads are very similar to the native Australian frogs and unprepared volunteers will significantly decrease their populations.
And finally, the author posits that spreading of cane toads can be decreased by using special designed virus. Even if other reptiles will be infected, it will only have influence on cane toads. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that virus can easily be transfered to the USA. Species from the Australia can be moved to the USA by touists or other people. The problem is that in USA cane toads are playing a big role in ecological cycle and uncontolled virus will led to big ecological catastrophe.
