TOEFL T P O 21 Integrated Writing Task genetic modification

Recently, there is a ton of debate about genetically modified trees and their costs and benefits. More specifically, regarding the passage, the author puts forth the idea that planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits and he provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that planting these kinds of trees on a large scale has more costs and less positive points and addresses, in detail, the trouble of each point made by the passage.

First, the passage claims that genetically modified trees are designed to be hardier than natural trees and they are more likely to survive than their unmodified counterparts. Some professionals in the same field stand in firm opposition to this claim. The professor, for example, believes that they may be resistant to one type of situation but we can't be sure that they are resistant to some other kinds of events and conditions. He states that for several natural trees, some individual trees in a kind are resistant to some conditions and some are not. Therefore, after experiencing that condition, a few of them will survive. But the problem with genetically altered trees is that they are much more uniform and if they go through a situation, for example, climate change, they will all die with that change.

Second, the reading posits that genetically modified trees tend to grow faster, give greater yields, and be hardier and it will benefit farmers more than natural trees. However, the professor says that planting those trees has some hidden costs. Companies that sell the seeds charge much for each seed and after one period of yielding, farmers will not be able to use the seeds produced from the trees to plant them again. Instead, they have to pay companies every time.

Finally, the writer wraps this argument by proposing that the use of genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. It contends that introducing genetically modified trees which are designed for fast growth and high yield would satisfy the demand for wood in many areas and save the endangered native trees. The professor opposes this point by explaining that genetically modified trees deal more damage and grow more aggressively. According to the professor, compared to natural trees, they are more competent and in contention for minerals and water, they will win significantly, and eventually, this will result in crowding out natural trees.

To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views about if planting genetically modified trees is beneficial.
