TOEFL T P O 21 - Integrated Writing Task, genetic modification
The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about genetic modification whether have benefits or not. In the text, the author believes that genetically modified plant promises numerous benefits. The lecturer challenges all the reasons mentioned in the reading. She is of the opinion that none of these claims is far-reaching.
Firstly, the author states that genetically modified trees are able to endure harsh climate, they designed to be hardier than other usual trees. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that some of genetically modified tree may bear some specific conditions, but there are many different aspects that should be considered. Furthermore, she says that some of natural trees can survive in harsh condition, but all of the modified tree will be died because they have same characteristics.
Moreover, the reading passage asserts that modified trees provide some economical benefits since they can grow faster. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that modified trees have much hidden cost that should be contemplated. For instance, the farmers pay to seed when they want to cultivate their farms. While natural plants seed are usable for next cultivation. By considering these matter, these trees have not economical benefits.
Eventually, the author of the reading holds the view that modified tree could prevent the overexploitation of wild trees since their high yields of growth. The lecture, however, rebuts this by asserting that modified trees have numerous adverse effects on wildlife. In addition, she says that modified trees grow aggressively, and they make numerous problems for other trees such as using natural resource and sunlight. Thus, modified trees negative impacts on environment is more than its benefits.
