The reading and the lecture are both about the influences of planting genetic modified trees. The author of the article feels that there are three main benefits for planting the trees. However, the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She thinks that there are serious problems and causes associated with it.
First, the author suggests that the survival rate of genetically modified trees are is higher than their counterparts. In the article, it is stated that a new pest-resistant papaya has proved to be more immune to ring spot virus infections which have been continuously harming the native papaya tree population. The lecturer, however, refutes the claim by pointing out that genetically modified trees are genetically uniformed and only resistant to one condition. In contrast, the non-modified population are more genetically diversed that could survive in any condition. Once the genetically modified trees encountered a condition that they are not designed for, the entire population will be wiped out.
Second, the author posits that planting genetically modified trees is beneficial to the economy. The article mentions that those plants grow faster and yield more products. The lecturer rebuts this specific claim by stating that there are hidden cost that has to be taken into consideration. For example, seed provider charges more for the seeds from the farmers. Additionally, the cost is charged every time farmers plant.
Finally, the author argues that overexploiting can be prevented via planting genetically modified trees. Since the trees grow faster and have higher yield, people would not have to cut down endangered native trees. In contrast, the lecturer disagrees the statement by mentioning that the trees can do more damage to the ecosystem. The reason is that genetically modified trees grow aggressively among non-modified trees, which could outcompete and crowd out the latter.
