The reading and the lecture are both about the strange sound which was heard by submarine sailors in Russia between 1960s and 1980s. The reading passage provides three theories hypothesize the creator of the sound. On the other hand, the professor in the lecture states some reasons to refuse each theory one by one.
First of all, the author in text mentions a theory which says that the sound is belonging to orca whales in their courtship ceremony. However, the professor rejects the theory and claims that orca whales are living near the surface water. So, the submarines which are in the deep ocean could not hear the voice. She added that if the sound was related to whales the sonar had to detect the whales but it did not.
Secondly, the author in the text mentions another hypothesis which argues that the sound may be related to the giant squid because they have no bone and have soft body, the sonar could not detect them. The instructor in the lecture challenges the idea by asserting that this theory could be a good reason if the sound continued till now because the giant are living there until now, whereas, the sound disappeared after 1980s. As a result the sound was not belonged to giant squid.
Finally, it is mentioned in the text about the third theory which claims that the sound could be related to another military submarine that patrolling the sphere. On the contrary, the lecturer repudiates the notion by the text and contends that if the sound was related to another military sun marine there should be another sound from some machine or engine. She added that even today with most advanced technology the sounds of other submarine are detectable.
