TOEFL TPO 40- Integrated Writing Task
Both the author and the lecturer discuss possibility of permanent human presence on Venus. The author propose the idea that there is some conditions on Venus, which make it inhospitable. However, the lecturer gives the idea that the human’s station on Venus could be placed in about fifty kilometers above the surface. Moreover, he casts some serious doubt on this notion and provides a number of counter-arguments in response.
To begin with, the author stated that the atmospheric pressure at Venus is extremely greater than the pressure at Earth's surface. It is about 100 Kilograms on every square centimeter of surface. In this way, anything will be crushed there. On the contrary, the lecturer clarifies that in fifty kilometers above Venus' surface the pressure is like normal pressure on Earth.
Moreover, the reading and the lecture were ar odds in another point. The reading put forward the idea that there are no reservoirs of water on Venus' surface. Also, the atmosphere is lack of sufficient oxygen. Therefore, water and oxygen must supplied from Earth. However, the lecturer asserts that, in the Venus' atmosphere there is compounds like carbon dioxide, which could be turned to water and oxygen by some chemical mechanisms.
Finally, the writer of the article explained the last reason, which was little sunlight receives on the Venus' surface. The writer asserts that about 60 percent of the light reflected by the clouds and much of remained can not get through dense layer of carbon dioxide. Yet again, the lecturer repudiates this one too. As he says, clouds already exists in above fifty kilometer over the surface. But these clouds are not as thick as clouds that writer mentions. Also, solar panels could receive the energy of reflected light.
