Both the reading and listening discuss whether US employees should work five days a week or four days a week. The passage provides three advantages of working four days a week. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article. He refutes each of the author's reasons.
The first benefit of working less hours is that it will enhance the company's profit and less mistakes. Workers have more time to relax and the firm pay them eighty percents of their normal wages. This is challenged by the speaker. He states that the company have to spend the same amount of money for training, medical benefits for every employee. Moreover, they have to buy additional offices, computers. As a result, this will decrease the profit. Therefore, the firm does not get any advantage of having four-day per week workers.
The second area of advantage according to the article is the reduction of unemployment rate. There would be more jobs for new workers because of four-day workers. The company only have to pay eighty percent rate. Nevertheless, the professor argues that it is easier to ask employees to work overtime than hiring new workers. Additionally, it is worse when managers expect the same results from four-day workers as five-day workers. This will trigger huge harm to ongoing jobs. In other words, working less hours does not affect to the unemployment rate.
Last but not least, working less hours will give employees time to spend on vacation, activities. They will have opportunities to enjoy their lives after work. The professor, on the other hand, opposes by saying that their career may be jeopardized in the sense that they are not likely to get new promotion. The firm usually love to hire five-day workers to be managers to be capable of caring most work in the company.
