TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task
In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
The article states that working four-days week is quite beneficial for the company and individuals and provides three compelling reasons for support. however, the professor explains that it has a couple of drawbacks for both and refutes each the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading points out that working a few hours is to enhance the company's main profit because of employees less tired and more energetic that they may more hard-working on their job. The company’s expectation from their staff is very high and they believed that they can accomplish the same amount of work as before they did. however, the professor refutes this point by saying that adding more staff is required more training courses and medical insurance. Besides, the lecturer states that it is also needed more office space and computers are very harmful to the economy of the company.
Second, the article posits that it decreases the unemployment percentage of the USA due to the engaging of the part-time working crew replacing vacancy full-time workers. Some companies can’t afford to pay those two kinds of worker’s wages, so they decided to persuade to work more time. it makes all workers more unpleasant with their job.
Third, the reading posits that their workers can spend more time with their family and pursuing their hobby on account of the fact that they have plenty of time to concern their private lives but professor opposes this point by explaining that having a lot of time to do something beyond their job is precarious. Since they may lose their job abilities and even further if someone wants to pursue a career it is not possible for them to achieve their goal, even more, they aren’t allowed to think about the promoting quickly because of this policy.
