Both the reading and lecture are about Rembrandt, a 17th century Dutch painter, and his painting named "portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet". The reading passage indicates that there are some details in the painting which prove that the painting was not painted by Rembrandt. However, the professor in the listening disagrees with this.
First of all, the reading passage suggests that Rembrandt did not draw the painting because the woman wear a servant white line cap while she has a luxurious fur collar. However, the lecturer challenges this point by showing that the luxurious fur collar was added 100 years later. It means that the painting mentioned in the reading passage is not Rembrandt's original painting. This is because someone believed that adding the luxurious fur collar would increase the value of the painting.
Secondly, the author states that the painting light and shadow do not fit together, therefore; it is not Rembrandt's work. In the response, the lecturer says that these elements do not fit together because the luxurious fur collar was added. In fact, she argues that in the original painting the woman wears a light color collar. Thus, the light and shadow in original painting is extremely realistic and it is the painting of Rembrandt.
Lastly, base on the fact that several pieces of wood in the painting glued together, the reading claims that the painting was not drew by Rembrandt. On the other hand, the professor argues that the wood panel was enlarged with extra wood species to make the painting more value. The lecturer also implies that the origin painting is painted on a single piece of wood. Moreover, it is very same the tree which was drew in another painting by Rembrandt.
