Both the article and lecture discusses about the Chaco Canyon built in New Mexico back in twelfth century AD. The article suggests three probable purpose of these large buildings, however the lecturer have different ideas about the usage of Chacos.
First the article suggests Chacos was built as large residential apartments with exteriors similar to one currently existing in Taos, New Mexico. On the contrary the lecturer states the building cannot be residential due to the lesser number of fire palaces inside the building. As he explains there were only 10 fire palaces in the building where as around hundred rooms which does not support a residential living condition.
Second theory in the article assumes the large buildings as food storage for grain maize. The amount of grains assumed by the author needs a large place to be stored, which resembles with the size of the Chacos. On there other hand the speaker opposes this idea by saying, if there was grains stored in these houses there should be more traces of grains and big containers, which were missing during the excavation.
Finally the writing suggests ceremonial purpose for this Chacos since a mound was found blended with large number of pots, which assumed to be used in feasts during ceremony. Whereas the professor counters this idea by detailing the mixture of the mound where lots of other stuffs were found like sand stones and construction material. hence the lecturer suggests this as a general trash area where unused construction material may be dumped. and the empty pots found in the mound. may be used by the construction workers.
In conclusion it is clearly observed that the ideas depicted in the writing has been refuted by the speaker with sufficient evidence and example.
