TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The reading passage contends that three ideas are claimed by critics against the accuracy of the memoir about Chevalier de Seingalt who wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the idea in the reading passage that the memoir is not reasonable which is the evidence that considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant had borrowed by the Chevalier. This is attributed to the fact that he was very wealth with properties. He sold his properties he had and spent considerable sums of money in order to gamble. Thus, the reading passage’s first idea is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the idea made by the reading passage that the conversations that the Chevalier records in the memoir between himself and the famous writer Voltaire are not accurate at the views of critics. This is because that it is true they, Chevalier and Voltaire, had met and conversed many times at night. And he did write a note each night regularly when they conserved. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is refuted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea made in the reading passage that the memoir’s account of the Chevalier’s escape from a notorious prison in Venice, Italy is questioned by critics. It is obvious that according to government document, the prison would be repaired due to the fact that it was too old. As a result, with such reasoning, the reading passage’s last idea is contradicted.
