The author states that the all events in a long and invaluable memoir, written by Chevalier, are not accurate and presents three reasons for the statement. On the other hand, professor has the opposite viewpoint and rebuts all these reasons, believing that the memoir is accurate according to reliable historical records.
First of all, the article claims that Chevalier was not wealthy since he borrowed hefty amount of money from a Swiss merchant. The lecture debunks this perspective by saying that borrowing money does not mean that Chevalier was poor. When he travelled to Switzerland, in order to do gambling and being in parties, he wanted significant amount of money. He had a considerable amount of assets but to convert them to money he was forced to borrow money from a merchant until his money transferred to him from overseas. Therefore, borrowing money does not represent that Chevalier was poor.
Secondly, according to the text, it is almost impossible to record all the conversations which were happened hundreds of years before the time when Chevalier wrote memoir. This claim was also incorrect as Chevalier had recorded all the conversations between himself and well-known writer Voltaire. Each night, Chevalier wrote down all of his conversations in a personal notebook.
Finally, the author mentions that Chevalier was not actually escaped from the notorious prison in Venice and he indeed exaggerate about his escape and instead he bribed the officers to escape from the prison. This is also refused by the professor, pointing out that according to the historical records, there were much more influential and powerful people in those time who would be able to get themselves free from the prison by offering money to the officers. Nevertheless, none of them were successful of escaping from the prison. Moreover, after Chevalier escaped, there were reported that authorities repaired the ceiling of the prison. If Chevalier were not impaired the ceiling, there was not required to repair it just the day after he freed himself.
