The reading passage suggests some events in memoir of Chevalier may invented or distorted and provides three pieces of evidence. However, the professor refutes each idea of the author.
First and foremost, the reading states that researchers found that he borrowed money from the merchant however he wrote that he was healthy and spend considerably of it in parties when he was in Switzerland. On the other hand, the lecturer argued that he borrowed it until he got his own money because it took a few days to convert money.
Secondly, the passage indicates the impossibility of the conversation between famous writer Voltaire and Chevalier written in the memoir. Thus, it is impossible to remember all the words and phrases which sustain the idea that Chevalier may invent it. In contrast, the professor said that witnesses said that he tries to remember all the words every night and also always brought a journal with himself.
Thirdly and finally, the article claims the story of how the Chevalier escape from the prison using metal to make a hole and climb into the wall of Venice could be false because the friends of Chevalier may release him from there who politically related him well. Nonetheless, the lecturer made a counterclaim to the idea by saying that there are also prisoners who have friends but they are not free in that time. Moreover, she continued that there is a document about how to repair the prison room which is related to the Chevalier.
