The reading and the lecture discuss hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine which is a new source of power for automobiles instead of the current –internal-combustion engine. The author believes that the advantages of the hydrogen-based engine are really beneficial for the environment. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that although these new engines are not as harmful as the current engines, they have its disadvantages and he also corrects some author’s points.
First, the author comes up with the idea that hydrogen-based engines have a solid and plentiful source of energy, it is mentioned that internal-combustion engines depend on a finite source which is petroleum and it will be someday depleted. However, the professor argues that engines dependent of hydrogen will not such a great source as the author says because hydrogen needs to be in a pure liquid state in which to get it is very difficult cold, and the unique way is artificially through cooling at -60 degrees.
Second, the author states that these new engines will solve some pollution-related problems because the carbon dioxide is a really harmful chemical for the environment. And, on the other hand, the unique product of this engines is water. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that the process to transform the hydrogen into a liquid state requires a factory process, so, factories will pollute in the same way.
Finally, the author contends that there will be a save of money with this new kind of engines because they will be two times more efficient and require just the half of energy that a combustion engine uses. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the hydrogen's purification process will be expensive as well because it needs platinum – an expensive chemical-, without it the production of electricity will be unsuccessful.
