The article contrasts Internal combustion engines with the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine which can be used as a main source of power for cars. The author gives the advantages of hydrogen fuel cells over IC engines. However, the professor in the lecture refutes the author's claims.
Firstly, the article says that IC engines need petroleum, which is a finite source and one day we may end up without petroleum. On the other hand, fuel-cell engines don't encounter this scarcity problem, asserts the author, because it relies on hydrogen which can be produced from plenty of sources. However, the professor refutes this claim. She says it is not easy to produce hydrogen though it is available in many common sources like water. This is because fuel-cells need hydrogen as an artificial substance in pure liquid form, which is difficult to produce and store. In addition, explains the speaker, liquid hydrogen has to be stored in minus 253 degrees Celsius and it requires sophisticated laboratory cooling technology to achieve this. So, fuel-cell engines are not practical and easily available.
Secondly, the article says that IC engines are responsible for polluting the environment. Since it operates by burning petroleum which produces carbon dioxide and this compound harms the environment, whereas hydrogen fuel-cells don't pollute because the only by-product is water, which is not harmful. The speaker, in contrast, says in order to produce hydrogen fuel-cells, that is, to produce pure hydrogen from water and natural gas requires high energy, which is obtained by burning oil and coal, which produces carbon dioxide, thus harming the environment. She also says that the factories which produce hydrogen fuel cells are a great threat to the environment though the cars that run on fuel cells will not pollute.
Finally, the article says it is economically feasible to operate hydrogen fuel-cell engines because it is two times efficient than the IC engines. Hence, one can travel twice with the same amount of fuel with hydrogen fuel-cell engine cars when compared to IC engines cars. The speaker, on the contrary, disagrees that it is really inexpensive. She says hydrogen fuel-cells require platinum metal, which is expensive and rare. This platinum alone suits these fuel cells and it cannot be replaced with any other metal. Hence this adds up the price and makes the hydrogen fuel-cells expensive.
Because of the above reasons, the speaker disagrees that hydrogen fuel-cells are easily available, economic friendly and cheap in contrast to what author claims in the article.
