The reading and the lecture are about four-day workweek. The author of the reading believes that this option would be beneficial to companies, employees, and society; in respect of reading lecturer have the opposite perspective with author
First, the author believes that shortened work week would increase company profit. If employees feel more rested, they will make a fewer mistake and work efficiently. However, the lecturer opposes with this and thinks offering 4-day work week Force Company to spend more money because new workers, which have been added, need training and medical cares, as a matter of fact, the costs of health cares are same for all employees despite their workweek, new worker also need resources such as office space and computers. With this in mind, adding new worker will cut down the economic condition of the company.
Secondly, the author believes that this option will reduce unemployment rates because more people are needed to finish a workload, but the lecturer shows his disagreement with this statement by saying. hiring a new employee is costly and companies will prefer other options such as overtime workers. the expectation will be increased cause companies think the amount of work should be the same even though they have a fewer amount of time. consequently, it caused unpleasant employee.
Finally, the author states that this policy will improve quality of employee lives. The lecturer doubt on this claim. he suggests this policy Present more risks and decrease job stability of employees cause they have more vulnerable status in the downturn and they lose their option for promotion in higher rank such as management, supervisor.
