The article and the lecture are both discussing the two theories behind the decline of the sea otters on the Alaskan coast. The article states that the water pollution is the cause behind that and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor casts doubt on the claims made in the article, she believes that the true reason for this phenomenon is the presence of a predator.
Firstly, the article claims that the analysis of the Alaskan coast water has proven the presence of chemicals that can negatively affect the otter's health. However, the professor refutes this point. She states that if this claim was true, then we would be able to find the bodies of the dead otters along the shore but this actually did not happen. Moreover, this proves that otters were actually killed by a predator in the middle of the sea, so, the water was not able to carry their bodies to the shore.
Secondly, the reading posits that the decline of other mammals like the seal can give a reasonable clue to prove the pollution hypothesis since the orcas which assumed to be the reason behind this phenomenon prefer to feed on the larger animals. This point was rebutted by the professor, She states that due the unresponsible behaviour of some people who hunt the wheals that orcas feed on them, it forced to feed on the small mammals like the otters and seal. Thus it leads to significant decline in the number of these mammals.
Finally, in contrary to what mentioned in the article to explain the reason behind the uneven distribution of the mammals' losses, the professors illustrate this by saying that the distribution is actually determined by the accessibility of the location to the orcas. Due to its large size, it cannot access the rocky areas and these places where the scientist found a large number of otter.
