TPO-11 - Integrated Writing Task A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature, novels, plays, and poems, than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for

The reading and the lecture are both about the decrease of literature readers.
The author of the reading believes that the reading public is reducing, especially among young people, which is an important loss for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself.
The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article.
She thinks that, there are reasons behind why it is often said that people are reading less than they used to.

First of all, the author claims that the decrease of book reading eventually affects the literature.
The passage states that there is no other source of intellectual stimulation like literature, since it encourages readers to imagination and empathy, expanding readers understanding of language, and missing we are missing important benefits.
This point is challenged by the lecturer.
She says that a book does not have to be about literature to stimulate the readers intellectually. Furthermore, she point out the fact that science, history, political books, can often offer a high-quality content and be as creative and stimulating as literature books.

Secondly, the author is concerned about the top books on the list of best sellers, the self-helf books, which beyond their superficiality and bad written quality, are also intellectually undemanding.
According to the passage, in addition to it, in instead of reading books, people are preferring lowered level of cultural activities, like, watch television, videos and read in web pages.
However, the lecturer rebuts this argument.
She suggests that there are several cultural materials that non-written activities, such as music and movies, do not lower the cultural standards.
She elaborates on this by mentioning that culture has changed, and there are different forms of expression other than novels and poems, and some of them speak more directly to contemporary concerns that literature does.

Finally, the passage states that read less is something regrettable, since good literature is being written by talented authors of our time and there is no audience for it.
The author’s opinion is that this leads to a decrease on publisher’s investments upon literature and, consequently, less support to serious writers.
The lecturer, on the other hand, mentions that it might be true that literature has less incentive nowadays than in the past.
She brings the idea that the fault should be related to the authors sometimes, and not the readers, since a lot of modern literature are difficult to understand.
