Both the lecture and reading article talk about declining reading habits in people. The passage put forth couple of reasons for the trend and impact of lack of reading on people. The lecture casts doubts on the reasons presented, with supporting arguments.

First, the reading proposes that, today people give preference to poorly written self-help books over a well written literature. Self-help books seriously lack in providing any intellectual stimulation. However, the lecture negates the claim by pointing out, science journals, political books are creative, well written. Not just literature but these books too are intellectually demanding.

Next, the reading claims, television, music video, and web page popularity is taking over reading and this trend is unfortunate and the decline in reading habit relates to lowering culture. The lecture makes an argument that, movies, music videos showcases and promotes plenty of cultural values. They do not pose any threat to culture. In addition, these avenues give more freedom of expression than literature.

Lastly, the passage states that, modern writers are very talented but have no audience. Lack of interest in good books, discouraging publishers and seriously affecting good writers. However, the lecture refuses the claim by stating, modern literature is complex to follow. Not everyone enjoys reading challenging novel. In fact, the professor adds, very few people from previous generation will enjoy today's literature.

In conclusion, the lecture disagrees with the reading passage with supporting explanation.
