The reading passage states importance of frogs in the ecosystem, also, the three ways to prevent decrease in number of frogs. However, the lecture points out the limitations of these proposed methods.
First, the reading article advise to have strict laws regarding pesticides use by farmers near the endangered frog population. Pesticide can seriously harm frogs. The lecture refutes this claim by stating, strict laws controlling pesticide use will not be economically practical and fair for the farmers. Farmers in that particular area will be at severe disadvantage than their competition. There is higher chance of losing crops and getting lower yields.
Secondly, the reading introduces use of anti-fungal cream to prevent the skin thickening; caused by a fungus, resulting into dehydration. However, the lecture argues that, treating individual frogs is very complicated and expensive procedure. Also, the infection can be passed on to the next generation; making it difficult to work on large scale.
Lastly, the passage recommends protecting natural environment of frogs from human activities. Wet lands, water systems are threatened by excessive use and development. The lecture counters this claim by pointing out, global warming is a bigger threat than human activities. It is the main reason behind extinction of various species. Moreover, the professor adds, prohibiting human activities near frogs' habitat will unlikely prevent the ongoing changes in the habitat caused by global warming.
In conclusion, the lecture refuses the theories discussed in the reading article to prevent the decreasing frog population.
