In this set of materials the reading and lecture both are discussing about authenticity of Jane Austen's portrait. The passage considers the portrait to be of Jane. The lecturer casts doubt on all the claims made in the passage and provides three reasons in support. He thinks the theories in reading are unconvincing.
To begin with, the reading suggests that the portrait is recognized by the decedents of Jane's family. They have also authorized the portrait. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that the portrait, when first was allowed for publication; Jane was already dead for 70 years. Jane's relatives or descendants, who had never met Jane in personal can not be so sure about authenticity of the portrait.
Furthermore, The article states that the teenage girl in the portrait, resembles the sketch of Jane drawn by her sister Cassandra. The lecturer contradicts this point of view. He states that the portrait might be of some other relative of Jane, who has a very large extended family such as, her cousins or a niece.
Finally, the author posits that even though, the portrait is by anonymous painter and undated the style of painting is quite similar to the painter Humphrey. He might be a family painter of Austen's at that time. Furthermore, he was still actively painting during Jane's teenage years. On the contrary, the speaker claims that the name of the seller of canvas which is mentioned on back of the portrait indicates according to the records that the seller started selling the canvas after Jane was 21. So, the fact that the poster is of Jane's is untrue.
