TPO-12 - Integrated Writing Task Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she lo

The reading and the lecture are both about Jane Austin, the famous English novelist which casts doubts whether the portrait was her or not. The author of the reading believes that it is in fact the true image of the novelist. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.

First of all, the author points out that the image presented in the editorial letter was Jane Austin. The article notes that family member recognized the portrait of the author. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says it is not convincing that the portrait was Austin, whereas, there are no evidence that it was Austin due to she was dead 70 years ago and family members haven't seen her long time ago.

Secondly the author contends that in Casandra's Sketch it resembles the facial features of Austin such as eyebrows, nose, mouth and overall aspects in the portrait. The articles notes that although the sketch was amateurish, it depicts the characteristics of the writer. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that there were no evidence that it Jane on her teenage years. He elaborates on this by mentioning that it was Mary Ann, that was in the image which looks exactly like the novelist. Furthermore, He argues that there is no concrete proof to support that it was her in the canvas, but, it was her distant cousin which has a resemblance to Austin.

Lastly, the author states that although the painting was outdated and unsigned, there are evidence to show that it was painted when she was a teenager. The article establishes that the image was painted by Ozias Humphrey, the strokes and styles in the painting dictates that it was the style of the painter. The author, on the other hand, posits that it was the style of the society portrait painter, but later date on the canvas shows that it was not made by Humphrey. The articles establishes that the blank canvas that was used in the portrait of Austin were a merchandise from William Leg, hence, Leg did not sell his canvas on London whereas the portrait was drawn. In addition the canvas was way older than the girl in the portrait.
