The reading passage and the lecture illustrates a fascinating topic pertaining to Jane Austen, who is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. The reading passage posits that the full-length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family is of Jane Austen and provides reasons for the same. However, the lecturer refutes each of the authors claims and provides evidences for the same.
The reading passage puts forth the idea that family members have recognised it as the potrait of Jane Austen. However, the lecturer refutes the claim by saying that the publications happened in 1882 and Jane Austen has died 70 years by then. Her family family wouldn't know her well because of the large year gap. The claim in the reading passage is unsubstantiated.
Second, the reading passage states that the Cassandra's sketch is almost similar to that the teenage Jane Austen because the eye brows, nose, mouth and overall shape are very much same as the full-length portrait. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposes this claim by saying that the portrait can be of a relative of Austin. He supports his claim by saying that Jane Austin has an extended family and the painting may be of one of her cousins. Also many experts believed that the painting resembled their distant niece. Clearly, a disparity exists between the author's claims and the evidence exhibited by the lecturer.
In addition, the reading passage claims that although the painting was unsigned and undated, there is evidence that painting was done when she was a teenager. The style links to Ozias Humphrey, a society portrait painter who was the kind of professional the wealthy Austen family would hire. Nonetheless, the lecturer rebutes the claim by saying that the stamp on the cloth which William sold was not in that age. He didn't sell canvas when she was small. Austin was old when he sold it.
In this way, the reading passage and the lecturer provides important information about the potrait. There is a lack of evidence to support the claims in the reading passage.
